Feeling incoherent or frenzied often stems from an imbalanced Mind, Body, and Spirit connection. We hear a lot of chatter about this connection, but what does it really mean? Is it simply a way to remind us of the power of our thoughts, or perhaps to prompt us to take better care of our bodies? Or is it useful in a more significant and relevant way?
The Mind, Body, and Spirit (MBS) connection refers to the important dynamic among our thoughts, our physical being, and our eternal knowledge. When all three are in balance, we can feel our greatest harmony, peace, and healthfulness. When one of the three is ignored or over-emphasized, the remaining two will unnecessarily either overcompensate or whither. “Wholeness” leads to an innate feeling of well-being and optimism.
For example, when you worry excessively (a thought takes hold in your mind like a wolf latches onto its prey) your body experiences physiological changes that are contrary to harmony. The body “stresses” in parallel to the stress that worry creates in the mind. Continued worrying often leads to breakdowns in the body’s normal regenerative abilities. Illness, tiredness, weight gain or loss can manifest. In addition, our soulful part (our intuitive connection with eternal wisdom) can become cloaked as well. When our connection with eternal knowledge is numbed, we can’t consciously recall the simple truths that direct our lives to happiness. In this case, spirit-numbing worry can prevent the recollection that life is meant to be enjoyed. It’s meant to be fulfilling, prosperous, and harmonious. Accessing this powerful knowledge can push a person out of perpetual negativity into a more positive perspective, thus releasing the mind from worry’s ferocious grip.
An imbalanced body can also cause the MBS connection to disharmonize. Everyone has an optimal pattern of nutrition, sleep, and exercise that energizes the mind as well as the body. When the body is neglected or abused, the mind fails to operate at its highest capacity and the connectedness with the spirit becomes muted as well. Can you think of certain foods that make you feel listless or cloudy? If you exercise with relative regularity, how many sedentary days until you feel lethargic, cranky, or stressed?
How do you optimize your MBS connection? The first step is to understand your body. Become actively aware of what foods energize you and which make you feel sluggish. Pay attention to how a day or two of poor food choices make you feel, and also notice how healthful choices make you feel. There is no perfect diet that is optimal for everyone. It’s important to listen to your own intuition about what fuels your body to its maximum health. Fad diets often fail because they are broad-based choices that do not harmonize everyone’s body. Frequently, they are so restrictive, as well, as to cause the body to “hang onto” what it’s got. In other words, the body feels deprived, so the metabolism can slow to protect the fuel that it already contains.
Next, keep a “worry” pad with you. Every time you begin to worry or fret, write down what is troubling you. Get it out of your head and onto the paper. This technique often serves to deflate the seeming importance of the worry. Further, if insomnia haunts you, use this technique to clear your mind and restore peace. The worries will be nicely preserved on your pad so you don’t have to “worry” about forgetting to worry. You can feel free to refer back to them anytime and, likely, they will seem less cumbersome when you read them. You may even laugh at yourself for getting so fretful earlier. Another benefit of recording your worries is that it helps to retrain the mind to let go of nonsense.
Lastly, honor your spirit. Your soul soars naturally in the eternal landscape; it simply plays hide and seek while you are experiencing a physical journey. To encourage your spirit to become a full MBS partner, give it a happy home. Submerge yourself in the positive, follow your interests, and remember how to love yourself. It’s a great practice to immerse yourself in Soul-Full books such as The Answers to Your Questions About Life or Begin Here. Surround yourself with experiences and people who awaken you and seek teachers who enlighten and empower you.
