By Karen L. Garvey & her guides

I want to share a personal story with you.  When I was younger, I felt different.  Somehow I couldn’t connect with my peers, especially in High School and college.  I had friends and did normal things others would do at those ages, but I always experienced a high degree of separation from people.  Having only my own lens to look through, I didn’t realize why I felt this way or that many shared that same feeling.  It was not about wanting to be like everyone else; it came from a deep sense that I was different.

Today, as I witness young people struggling through the stages of maturity, I realize that many of them have the same sense of isolation.  We know to address the issues of bullying, cyber-safety, respect for individuality, but we still as a society have not yet learned how to reach people who have unordinary high levels of awareness (spiritual maturity), those who are challenged to coexist within a peer set that is less aware.  These individuals may not stand out as being different or unhappy.  For this reason, their needs are often unmet.  They unknowingly crave soulful connections.  They long for depth in interaction and contact that exceeds the typical journey for teenagers and young adults.  As I converse with clients and seminar guests, I am hearing astonishing stories about depression and suicide among this group.

We have support for those who have special needs, those who need enrichment, those who demonstrate particular athletic, musical, or art talent.  We have learned to encourage tolerance, acceptance, diversity, and appreciation for individuality.  But we have yet to provide support to those “old souls” who are innately connected to matters of an eternal nature – those who sense how our present reality contrasts with universal wisdom.

What’s the answer?

In addition to hearing stories about young people struggling, I’m also increasingly hearing stories about high vibrational energy adults reaching out to this young population and providing them with opportunities that allow them to live to their fullness. These adults use intuition to assist young adults in finding important and meaningful outlets for their depth.  Finding such opportunities helps this group to feel connected to purpose and the excitement of life, while allowing time for their peer set to mature or their geography to expand to provide a larger pool of people with which to connect.

If you are one of those high vibrational energy people, consider volunteering as a guide to individuals in this group.  Be creative about how you may provide opportunities for discovery about meaningful aspects of the human experience.  Can you think of a way to help young people learn that we are all interconnected?  That we create the whole of our experience by what we think, feel, believe and the subsequent actions we take?  How about discovering that everyone is doing the best that they can within their level of awareness?  Isn’t it nice to know that those who behave in contrast to the unifying energy of love only behave these ways because they were separated during their youth from this soulful knowledge?

Take time to consider how you may be the light that keeps the soul’s candle burning for young people.  Although I’m focusing on teens and young adults, this calling can be expanded to include all ages.  If a child is experiencing a reprehensible home life, can you be the one that keeps their inner light shining as they continue along the path to maturity?  Can you be the one that respects them and appreciates them?  Are you the one who lets a young person know that they matter?

Do not judge young people. Do not assume that they are lazy or unfit for adulthood. Instead, assume that the knowledge within them has yet to be released and you can be the one to help its rediscovery. It’s time for each of us to live more as souls and less as humans.  That may be the surest way that we can advance toward our goal of living in a peaceful and harmonious world.

“I just wanted to tell you again how nice it was to meet you. You have a very approachable demeanor and you are very easy to talk to.  Since meeting with you my ambition and energy has exploded into such a driving force that I cannot describe the feeling.  I hope that I can live up to a role in which I am a leader because I do want to be one, and I am so worried about the direction of where the country is going.  I have so much to learn, but for the first time ever I feel that I am more than up to any task that I need to be."Thank you again.” –Gary, New York, NY
